Spanish Class and Health Care

Last week, our 7th grade Spanish class had five student nurses visit us from Florida Hospital University. They presented a skit and discussion on the benefits of knowing/understanding a second language in the medical field.  The skit presented the scenario of a non-English speaking parent depending on their young child to translate for them in the Emergency Room. Some of the Florida Hospital students were bilingual and some were not. Each spoke from their perspective emphasizing the point that accurate and timely information is important in providing proper patient care. Students are now working on their own bilingual skits in…

Art Intensive

K - 5G, February 6-10 We began our time together with stories about the artists Earl Cunningham and Roy Lichtenstein.  The stories helped bring back memories for the 4th graders of their field-trip to the Mennello Museum where these artists were being showcased.   For the rest of the students, the stories led to a basic understanding of folk art and pop art. Earl Cunningham (1893-1977) is a Florida folk artist who tells personal stories through his paintings of memories growing up by the sea in Maine, his travels down the eastern coast of the United States and later living in Florida.  We began…

Art in the Garden

Tuesday, November 15, Orlando Junior Academy held it’s annual Art in the Garden. Our hopes and goals for Art in the Garden are simple: Our desire is for students to witness artists, writers, musicians and performers as they thoughtfully "take in" the garden.  As artists find their inspiration, choose focus, perspective and purpose, we’re watching them take an idea & bring it to completion. We hope that by letting students observe and learn from our guests in this fun environment, that the students will gain tools for creative problem solving. We hope students will realize that, like the artists they…
