Last week, our 7th grade Spanish class had five student nurses visit us from Florida Hospital University. They presented a skit and discussion on the benefits of knowing/understanding a second language in the medical field. The skit presented the scenario of a non-English speaking parent depending on their young child to translate for them in the Emergency Room. Some of the Florida Hospital students were bilingual and some were not. Each spoke from their perspective emphasizing the point that accurate and timely information is important in providing proper patient care. Students are now working on their own bilingual skits in small groups to reinforce this point.
